Arvada Days Dutch Oven Cook-Off

 

The Arvada Festivals Commission is pleased to bring back to the community Arvada Days at Clear Creek Valley Park: 5900 Tennyson St. Arvada 80003!

 

Join us in celebrating the 3rd annual Arvada Days!
We will have fun for the whole family and welcome guests to participate in a variety of activities while they mingle with other community members.


 The event is open to the public Saturday, August 24, 2019 ~ 11:00 am to 3:00 pm

Cook-Off Schedule

10:00am-12:00pm: Competition Check-In

1:30pm-2:00pm: Judging

2:15pm: Winners Announced

3:00pm: Cook/Prep Area Cleaned and Vacated



GENERAL RULES & GUIDELINES:

  1. This is a Cook Anything You Want competition.

  2. Judging will be conducted, and prizes awarded for top individual Youth and Adult dishes.

  3. One team may enter a maximum of three dishes*

  4. Only one (1) dish per team member will be allowed (ex. a 1-person team can submit only 1 dish into the competition, and a 5-person or 3-person team can submit up to 3 dishes)

  5. One team member must always remain in the competition area.

  6. To maintain safety no more than 5 team members are allowed in the designated cooking area at one time. Team members can switch in-and-out during competition.

  7. An adult must always accompany any contestant under 18.

  8. Each team will be given a space to cook in. All equipment must fit in that space.

  9. Please note team prep space is limited to a designated 10’x10’ area. For charcoal cooking, a competition managed “hot coals” area will be provided for the dutch oven and coals. Pre-approved dutch oven tables may also be utilized in team prep space. 
  10. Alcohol consumption and use of tobacco, in addition to dogs or other animals, are not allowed inside of the competition area due to Health Department and safety concerns. 
  11. Upon completion of cooking prep, all Dutch Ovens using charcoal as fuel will be required to be cooked in designated hot charcoal area, or have an approved dutch oven table.
  12. No open flame cooking allowed charcoal and propane fuels only.

  13. Each team is required to bring all their own equipment needed to compete, including ingredients, Dutch Oven, propane/grill, cooking utensils, table, etc (shade tent recommended) **

  14. **Teams are NOT required to bring their own charcoal. The Arvada Festivals Commission will provide charcoal for each team.**

  15. No liquid fuels are allowed for starting charcoal. Commercial charcoal containers are to be used for starting

Disposal of briquettes and supplies to be completed in designated areas only. No hot charcoals/embers are to be disposed in waste receptacles at any time. 


FOOD PREPARATION:

  1. Ingredients cannot be precooked and must be combined, chopped, sliced, or diced during the competition -on site- including garnishes and marinating. For safety reasons, no ingredients prepared or processed at home are allowed.

  2. All cooking must be done in an approved (factory made) Dutch Oven or cast iron cookware. The use of approved (factory made) Cast Iron skillets, sauce pans, griddles, etc. can be used in preparation, but the finished dish must be cooked in the Dutch Oven.

  3. All cooked foods must be presented to the judges with the exception of excess gravies and sauces. Removing burnt or undercooked sections of food may lead to lowered scores or disqualification.

  4. Battery operated or electrical devices, such as mixers or blenders, are not allowed in the preparation of food. Electricity access is not available in prep or cooking areas. Battery powered digital thermometers and digital scales are allowed.

  5. Hot water is NOT available. Please plan on heating water yourself over briquettes or propane.

  6. Know and practice safe food handling procedures - it is the responsibility of the contestant to keep all foods at appropriate temperatures at all times. Hand washing and sanitation stations will be provided. 

  7. Our goal is to teach and excite the public about this time honored tradition and skill. We want the public, and you as a contestant, to enjoy this competition. Please be courteous in sharing cooking information, your passion and your knowledge. 

  8. Arvada Days and it's sponsors are not responsible for accidents or damage incurred during the cook-off.
